World Concerns

The Haxby & Wigginton World Concerns Group exists to promote congregational engagement with issues beyond the parish boundaries.  Explicitly we foster our links with a number of Christian organisations, running events and offering prayers:

Youth for Christ www.hullyfc.co.uk

Hull Youth for Christ was established in the 1950's and was involved with organising city wide events and training for the church.

In the early nineties it was decided that a change of approach was needed in order to reach out to young people living in deprived areas who were not likely to hear about the Gospel. A project was then set up on the Boulevard in West Hull with a team of Christians living in the area and helping to meet the needs of young people and families in the community; building relationships where faith could be shared sensitively.

Hull Youth Christ is still present on the Boulevard and the same vision is now also driving a project on Greatfield.

The Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren

First formed in 1993, St Mary's has a link with two congregations of the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren in Chocen and Brandys in the Czech Republic.

Standing in the secret church tradition of Protestantism in this part of Central Europe, in recent years its members have stood firm in witness to their faith in the harsh years of German and Soviet occupation. Holding firm to their conviction that believers have, under God, the right to receive communion in both kinds, bread and wine, the highly prized symbol of their faith and Church is the chalice.

Our link has been one in which through exchange visits and correspondence we have sought ways in which to encourage them, while at the same time being open to all that they have to offer us from the richness of their tradition, the story of their recent past, and the joyfulness and musicality of their present way of life.
