Ways to Worship

Worship lies at the heart of the Christian faith.

We believe that God is love – a love that is revealed to us through creation, through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, and through the Holy Spirit

As Christians we offer our worship to God ‘in the name of’ Jesus’ and ‘in the power of the Holy Spirit’.

We want to praise and adore God, giving thanks for creation and for blessings we receive.

We reflect on those times when things have gone wrong and want to say ‘sorry’.

We offer to God our thanks, concerns and prayers for those whom we love, and all those people and situations which worry us.   We often call these ‘intercessions’.

We can worship God on our own or with other people.

Being on our own

We can worship God and pray to him at any time, and mostly anywhere!

Our churches are open most days and many people welcome the opportunity to call in – to pray, to meditate or contemplate in silence.

Worshipping with other people

Our churches offer worship services every Sunday and on some weekdays.

See the Calendar for more information.

Our services mostly consist of readings from the Bible, prayer, a time for reflection or a sermon and, at our sung services, hymns and music.

Sundays

Our Sunday morning services are usually The Eucharist, or Holy Communion.

At present each church has one said and one sung Communion service most Sundays.

On the third Sunday of each month at St Nicholas’ Wigginton the 9.30 a.m. service is Morning Worship (which is not Communion)

There is an evening service, called Evensong, most weeks on Sunday evening at St Mary’s Haxby.   Sometimes this service takes a different format, such as a healing service, a carol service or a service for a special occasion.   See our Calendar for details.

Weekdays

A service of morning prayer takes place most weeks on Monday at 9.00 a.m. at Wigginton, and in the different churches in the benefice on Wednesday at 9.00 a.m. (see Calendar)

There are two ‘mid-week’ communion services:

St Mary’s Haxby - Wednesday, 10.00 a.m.

St. Nicholas’ Wigginton - Thursday, 10.30 a.m.

Occasional Services

We hold various services from time to time to mark specific occasions or church ‘feast days’.   These will be advertised on the homepage or the Calendar.
